The word 'bean' is an imprecise word. All beans are legumes (Fabaceae family) but which genus count as 'beans' depends on who is defining it (e.g. for tax, tariff, etc).
Everyone agrees that it's definitely a bean - Faboideae sub-family, Phaseolus and Vigna genus:
- Black/Kidney/Pinto/Navy beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) (NOT green beans, see below)
- Lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus)
- Mung bean (Vigna radiata)
- Black-eyed Pea (Vigna unguiculata)
Other genus that are botanically close and either beans or bean-like - Other Faboideae sub-family:
- Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum)
- Lentils (Lens culinaris)
- Soybean (Glycine max)
- Fava beans (Vicia faba)
- Lupin Bean (Lupinus spp.)
United Nations Food and Ag Org doesn't consider these to be a 'pulse', but include other bean and bean like legumes:
- Green Beans (vegetable crops) (Phaseolus vulgaris)
- Fresh Peas (vegetable crops) (Pisum sativum)
- Soybean (seed oil) (Glycine max)
- Peanut (seed oil) (Arachis hypogaea)
Leguminous but not considered legumes by farmers:
- Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) and other Genisteae
Weird Beans that are beans but not used like beans:
- Guar beans (guar gum) (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba)
Non-bean legumes but still in pods:
- Tamarind (Tamarindus indica)
Non-bean legumes (Fabaceae family):
- Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
- Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)
Not beans but named bean:
- Vanilla Beans (Vanilla planifolia)
- Coffee Beans (Coffea spp.)
- Cacao Beans (Theobroma cacao)
- Tonka bean (forbidden bean) (Dipteryx odorata)
- Jelly beans (Jellius beanius)
Foods that are bean or bean-adjacent:
- Miso
- Hummus
- Falafel
- Tempeh
- Tofu
- Edamame
